Looking up a block
The free lookup and the address search run in your browser, against files published on this site. When you type an address, your browser downloads a list of addresses for roads starting with the same two letters; the address you type isn’t sent to us.
Like every website, our host (Cloudflare) sees the internet address of the device making each request, to deliver the page and protect the site. We don’t use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and we don’t keep logs of who looked at which block.
Buying a report
Payment is handled by Stripe on its own checkout page. Stripe collects your email address and card details to take the payment and send your receipt; Lotline never receives your card details. Stripe tells us that the payment went through and which title it was for.
When your report is issued we keep: the report itself, its fingerprint (SHA-256), an independent timestamp, a verification code, and a one-way fingerprint of the Stripe checkout reference, so we can match a payment to its report without keeping the reference. None of these contain your name, email or card details.
The timestamp comes from FreeTSA, an independent time-stamp authority. It receives only the report’s fingerprint, never the report or anything about you.
Cookies
One cookie, lotline_access, is set when you buy a report. It holds the titles and report numbers you’ve bought, signed so it can’t be altered, and lets you reopen your reports on this device for a year. It is needed for the service and isn’t used for anything else. There are no other cookies for visitors.
Verification codes
Anyone who has a report’s verification code can check that report and download it at lotline.co.nz/verify. That is what the code is for: so your lawyer, lender or anyone you choose can check it. Share it only with people you want to see the report.
Where information is kept
- Cloudflare (the site, and the issued reports) runs worldwide.
- Stripe (payments and receipts) is based in the United States and processes payments worldwide, under its own privacy policy.
They process information on our behalf, for the purposes above, and we remain responsible for it under the Privacy Act 2020.
The records in our reports
Reports show what public datasets hold about land: parcels, titles, roads, land cover, water and rules. They never show owners’ names: title records give us a count of registered owners, not who they are.
Your rights
Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can ask for the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it. Email admin@lotline.co.nz. We’ll answer within 20 working days. You can also complain to the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz).
Changes
If what we collect changes, for example when accounts or alerts are added, this page will say so before it happens, with the date.
